Did you know what happens inside the Pantheon when it rains? 🌧️👁‍🗨 The “oculus” (the Latin word for “eye”) is the only source of natural light in the building apart from the entry door. A beam of light penetrates this circular hole to create a dramatic effect as it slowly travels across the floor and wall of the rotunda, illuminating them like a spotlight.👁‍🗨 This intriguing aspect of the Pantheon immediately catches the eye of any visitor who enters the vast circular space.🌬 The oculus al

The Son of Rome on Instagram: "The Pantheon’s 25 foot wide oculus is the dome’s only natural light source, functioning as an “eye” to the sky that illuminates the interior, cools the space, and even acts as a moving sundial throughout the day. Its circular opening also relieves structural stress, channels rainwater through hidden floor drains, and symbolically links the human world below with the heavens above. #Pantheon #AncientRome #RomanArchitecture #Oculus #History"

World Trade Center (PANYNJ) on Instagram: "A Wedge of Light The orientation of the Oculus is in alignment with the sun's solar angles on each September 11, from 8:46 am, when the first plane struck, until 10:28 am, when the second tower collapsed. Its central skylight fits this alignment and washes a beam of light on the Oculus floor."

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of September 11th. As we remember the events of that day, let's take a look inside the Oculus and examine a touching tribute to the original towers. Each year on the anniversary of September 11th, the solar alignment is such that a beam of light illuminates the Oculus, creating a shadow reminiscent of the original twin towers. This beam illuminated the center of the Oculus at 10:28 am, the moment when the second tower fell. This year, markers have been fixed to t
