Not to "deflect" attention from other things.... but check these out! These are "smoke deflectors" or "smoke hoods" (depending on the railroad), and their purpose is fairly obvious atop the stack in this video. These, restored by the Union Pacific Railroad Steam Team, are the only functional smoke deflectors in the Americas. 🐻🥧🐒 #unionpacific #bigboy #upsteam #railway #heavyequipment #railroad #victory #alco #horsepower #steamlocomotive #steamengine #mountains #locomotive #smoke #deflectors #

We've had a number of questions asked about smoke hoods/smoke deflectors. "Why are they needed" being the most common. Check out this video. Imagine both the potential damage to the tunnel ceiling and the manner in which the smoke would more so wrap around the locomotive, if not for the device atop the stack. As it exits the tunnel it can be seen retracting to either side. 🐻🥧🐒 #unionpacific #bigboy #upsteam #railway #heavyequipment #railroad #victory #alco #horsepower #steamlocomotive #steame
